DISTRICTS 

While traveling through Albania, the tourists will avail themselves of the opportunity to see beautiful landscapes, relics of early civilization, types of buildings of great interest from architectural viewpoint, especially Gjirokastra and Berat, national costumes, which are distinguished for their designs, mastery, technique, colors and decorations. This entire treasury brings into evidence the diversified and rich material and spiritual culture inherited from generation to generation and embodied in handicraft articles and works adorned with motifs of national tradition. 

Albania’s arts are distinctive and rich, and it is known for handicrafts of high artistic quality (wood carving, filigree, engraved copper vases, alabaster, ceramics, rugs and leather). The country is divided in; 65 Municipalities, 309 Communes, 36 Districts included in 12 Prefectures. Each district town and village has its own local government headed by an elected executive mayor and elected council. The people of Albania are friendly, good humored and traditionally hospitable and respectful to foreign visitors. 

The population is 3.087.159 (July 2001 estimated by Statistic Institute), with a density of 115.5 inhabitants per square km. Before 1990, two-thirds of the population lived in the countryside. Today this ratio has changed as the result of free movement of the population from the countryside towards the cities in the country or abroad.

Three religions coexist peacefully: Islam, Orthodox and roman Catholic.
